Is Your Pool Deck Design Safe for Kids?

To homeowners, a pool area is an investment, but for children, it is a haven for water fun and enjoyment with siblings and friends.

Kids are carefree and don’t think about safety features, which is why it’s crucial to ensure that your child-friendly pool deck design includes plenty of safety measures to prevent, if not eliminate, any possibility of danger.

Whether it’s activities for the family or games for everyone, the space should be designed with everyone’s safety in mind. Additionally, consider weather-resistant materials and low-maintenance options that provide a safe place for both adults and kids to enjoy.

Creating a kind and welcoming backyard environment ensures that anyone can have fun while staying safe on solid ground.

Investing in Slip-Resistant Decks

Safety is one of those things you don’t skimp on when investing in a pool deck. Sometimes, the most efficient features cost the most. When it comes to pool deck surfaces, however, there are inexpensive ways to make it safer against slips and falls.

A stamped overlay or spray texture can be added to an existing concrete deck to improve its look and traction. The texture they provide is evident enough to keep people from slipping and falling but subtle enough to be comfortable to walk on with bare feet.

Additionally, consider cushioned surfaces and non-toxic materials to enhance safety and comfort, especially for children.

Railings and Barriers

Most pools only add railings that aid in going down the steps. If you have kids, it might be nice to install more than that.

Opt for childproof fencing and gates that children cannot climb. If you don’t want anything permanent, since kids will grow up sooner than you think, there are portable options.

These railings, fences, and gates can be detached if you need to clear the pool deck for a party or event. Ensure that these barriers also have edges that are safe and cushioned to prevent injuries.

Choosing a Pool Entry

The basic types of pool entries are steps, baja shelf, and beach entry. Forget about ladders; they are not practical or convenient for children. If you choose a set of steps, make sure the depth and edges are comfortable for short legs.

A baja shelf is a wide pool step that extends several feet further, creating a shallow area where small kids and pets can walk and wade in the water without getting in too deep.

A beach entry, with its slight slope, is great for handicapped people in wheelchairs, and kids will love gradually entering the pool at their own pace, feeling safe at their chosen level.

Make Safety Gear Accessible

Create a spot on the pool deck where safety gear is stored and ready for use. This should include a first-aid kit, swim rings, floaties, goggles, ropes, life vests, and more.

Educate your children on how to use such gear and brief them on the importance of supervision at all times. Additionally, ensure that the diving board and other pool accessories are used safely and with caution.

Remind everyone to apply sunscreen and to follow pool rules to keep the area safe and fun for all.

Maintenance Tips

Regularly check the drainage and depth markers, and ensure the board and other surfaces are in good condition to maintain a safe pool environment.
